Opening Ceremony at the 2026 World Junior Wushu Championships

In the lead-up to the 2026 World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin, the Wayland Li Wushu team arrived in China and began final preparations for the competition. Led by Shifu Wenqi Li and Coach Erica Li, our athletes — Lia, Allen, Venus, Lucas, Eason, Lucas C., Derrick, Thea and Khloe — joined other athletes from Team Canada in Tianjin, taking part in final training sessions, official activities and the Opening Ceremony before competition began.

Lia Tang-Ruggiero was selected as the flag-bearer for the opening ceremony, holding the national flag as Canada was announced among the many nations participating in the competition.

What an amazing experience for all involved. It was a blast in Tianjin!

China Training Preparation for World Junior Wushu Championships

Go behind the scenes with our Wushu Team during a full 85-minute training session in China ahead of the 2026 World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin.

This session captures the team preparing in the final day before the championships began, as our athletes worked through warm-ups and basics, taolu sections and full routines, difficulty movements and competition preparation.

The training ultimately translated into an outstanding performance at the World Championships, with Wayland Li athletes winning 7 gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze for Canada.

Athletes featured include Lia, Allen, Venus, Lucas, Eason, Lucas C., Derrick, Thea and Khloe, under the guidance of Shifu Wenqi Li. A look at the work behind the results … and what high-level junior wushu training looks like before a major international competition.

We are 10 days out until the World Junior Wushu Championships, and the team from Wayland Li Wushu are ready to respresent Canada in Tianjin, China.

We’ve been training diligently and DAILY to make this Wushu dream a reality … and make Team Canada proud.

Markham City Hall recognition 2025

On November 24, 2025, the City of Markham held a Community Recognition Ceremony for our athletes that competed in the 2024 World Junior Wushu Championships in Brunei for Team Canada. Our athletes were honoured with this recognition alongside our members of the Markham community that had outstanding achievements in sports, the arts, science, business and academics.

Congratulations to the following Canadian Wushu Team athletes:

  • Lia Tang-Ruggiero (Gold in Gunshu and Gold in Daoshu for Girls B Group)

  • Ryan Gao (Gold in Daoshu for Boys C Group)

  • Thea Dong (Silver in Daoshu for Girls C Group)

  • Eason Gao (Bronze in Qiangshu for Boys C Group)

  • Chris Gao (Bronze in Qiangshu for Boys A Group)

  • Venus Li (4th in Qiangshu, 5th in Jianshu for Girls B Group)

  • Marcus Li (4th in Gunshu for Boys B Group)

  • Amanda Sun (6th in Jianshu for Girls A Group)

  • Allen Liu (4th in Gunshu for Boys A Group)

The City put on a great event with the following activities: playing of the Canadian national anthem, awards handed out by Major Frank Scarpitti, individual and group photos, and a short reception with snacks.

We Celebrate our World Champions!!!

On December 18th, 2022, we held a celebration party for the 8 Wayland Li athletes that competed in the 2022 8th World Junior Wushu Championships. The party was attended by the athletes and their families, as well as the existing students, parents and supporters of our school. It was a great way to celebrate our team’s success on the world stage!

We would also like to thank all the generous donors that supported the team - your gesture is much appreciated!

Also, thank you to the team at Canada Newstar Talent for covering the event and interviewing our team members, Coach Erica and Shifu. Very cool!


Champions at the 2022 World Junior Wushu Championships!

Congratulations to the success of all 12 athletes from Team Canada, including 8 from Wayland Li Wushu, that participated in the 8th World Junior Wushu Championships! The event was held from December 3rd to 11th in Tangerang, Indonesia.

Key achievements:

  • Gold medal in Group B Gunshu, Silver medal in Group B Changquan and Bronze medal in Group B Daoshu for Lia Tang-Ruggiero

  • Bronze medal in Group C Daoshu for Venus Li

  • Bronze medal in Group C Gunshu for Sophia Liao

  • Caleb Akai, Amanda Sun, Chris Gao, Allen Liu and Marcus Li finishing with top 10 or better placements in their respective divisions

  • Congrats to all of the Canadian athletes - you are all winners and represented Canada proudly

Team Canada champion featured in media for World Junior Wushu Championships

The media group Xinhua featured a series of photos from the 2022 World Junior Wushu Championships and covered a few of the athletes during their taolu routines.

Lia Tang-Ruggiero was featured in one of these photos during his bronze-medal Daoshu performance.

We train for the 2022 Canadian Wushu Team Trials!

The 2022 Canadian National Wushu Championships will be held from July 28 to 31st in Thunder Bay, Ontario. We are super excited to be training and sending a superb team to the national team trial selections. All the best to all athletes and take this time to train hard!!!

The venue will be held at Lakehead University and will feature High Performance Wushu athletes, traditional Kungfu, Taiji and Sanda events.


Athletes that make the Canadian National team will have the opportunity to compete in the World Junior Wushu Championships this December, which will be held in Indonesia.
